Estimates are a starting point. Get 3 real quotes from CPSC-accepted labs, free. Copy your test list and paste it into the product description on the quote form.
Totals are estimates for budgeting, built from published CPSC cost figures and lab and industry price ranges (sources below). They exclude quote-based items, sample shipping, rush fees and periodic retesting. Last verified October 2026. General information, not legal advice. KidsTestingLabs is an independent directory and guide: we don't test products and never issue or certify Children's Product Certificates. The US importer or US manufacturer certifies compliance.
FAQ
Testing cost questions
How much does CPSIA testing cost?
Most children's products cost about $400 to $1,800 per SKU to test at a CPSC-accepted lab. Compliance Gate says most of its clients pay $500 to $1,800, a simple single-material item runs about $400 to $800, and an electronic toy with button cells about $1,500 to $2,500. Every extra material, color and fabric adds chemical or flammability tests, which is why the estimator scales those tests by your counts.
Why do testing quotes vary so much?
Labs price per test, so the bill depends on how many materials, colors and fabrics need testing, the age grade, and features like batteries or magnets. Location matters too: CPSC found a heavy-elements test costs about $60 in China versus about $190 in the US. Rush service adds roughly 40 to 60 percent, high-volume clients get discounts, and turnkey services for small makers charge more per test (for example $385 to $545 per test at The Makers Resource Shop).
How can I cut my testing cost?
Use fewer distinct materials, colors and fabrics. Rely on component part testing (16 CFR 1109), such as a supplier's passing report for a fabric or paint used across several SKUs. Don't pay to test materials CPSC has exempted: textiles and unfinished wood from lead testing (16 CFR 1500.91), certain unadulterated plastics from phthalate testing (16 CFR 1308), and unfinished manufactured fibers (16 CFR 1253). Test near the factory, get 3 quotes, and if you qualify as a registered small batch manufacturer, you may avoid third-party testing for some rules.
Is this estimate a quote or legal advice?
No. It's a budgeting estimate built from published CPSC cost figures and lab and industry price ranges. Your lab confirms which rules apply and what they cost, and you, the US importer or manufacturer, certify compliance on the CPC. KidsTestingLabs never issues or certifies CPCs.
Does the estimate include retesting?
No. It covers initial certification for one SKU. Products in continuous production need periodic testing at least once a year by default (every 2 or 3 years with a production or ongoing testing plan, 16 CFR 1107.21), plus retesting after any material change.
